Bill McKibben

• Acclaimed environmentalist, Bill McKibben, is author of The End of
Nature
(1989) and Deep Economy (2007). In 2007, he led the organization
of the largest demonstrations against global warming in American history.
McKibben’s newest undertaking is 350.org, an international campaign
dedicated to building solutions to the climate crisis and culminating with a
global day of action on October 24th (www.350.org/mission).

Benjamin Barber

• Benjamin R. Barber is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at Demos
(www.demos.org). He is author of the classic Strong Democracy (1984), the
international best-seller Jihad vs. McWorld (1995) and the recent
Consumed: How Markets Corrupt Children, Infantilize Adults, and Swallow
Citizens Whole
(2007). Ultimately however, Barber points to possibilities
for liberating citizens from the clutches of consumerism, empowering them to
take informed responsibility for their role in economic exchange.

Alisa Gravitz

• For more than twenty-five years, Alisa Gravitz has led Green America
(formerly Co-op America), the national organization advocating for a just
and sustainable economy (www.coopamerica.org). Alisa co-authored Co-op
America’s respected guide to social investing, which is used by over half a
million people to invest according to their values.

DETAILS

Time: Saturday, October 17, 2009; 10:00 - 5:00. There will be a lunch break from 12:00 - 1:00. Registration starts at 9:30.

Cost: 25 BerkShares/Dollars per person, 15 BerkShares/Dollars per member of the E. F. Schumacher Society, and 15 BerkShares/Dollars for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the door. Please arrive early. BerkShares gratefully accepted.

Lunch: SOLD OUT. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN. A vegetarian brown bag lunch may be ordered in advance for an additional $15. Call for menu details. Alternatively there are several nearby restaurants or bring your own lunch.

Directions: The First Congregational Church of Stockbridge is located on West Main Street (next to Town Hall) in Stockbridge.  From Boston, take the Lee Exit on the Massachusetts Turnpike and follow signs south (Route 102) to Stockbridge.  From New York City take the Taconic Parkway to Route 23 in Claverack.  Follow Route 23 east to Great Barrington, where Route 23 joins Route 7. Take Route 7 north to Stockbridge, turn left on Main Street at the Red Lion Inn.  The church will be on your left approximate 1/3 mile. The historic red brick church is easy to identify behind the prominent clock tower.
